BOTANICAL GARDEN ORGANIZATION
In the Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden Scientific and teaching activities are organized through the following Chairs: The Chair of Ecology and Plant Geography; Chair of Algology, Mycology and Lichenology; Chair of Morphology and Plant Systematics; Chair of Microbiology and Chair of Plant Physiology. The Chairs of the Institute offer courses for the students of the Faculty of Biology and research facilities in the following areas:
- Plant and fungi taxonomic studies;
- Floristic investigations of Yugoslavia and the Balkans;
- Phytogeographic studies of plant species of the flora and vegetation of Yugoslavia and the Balkan Peninsula;
- Ecology of plant species and communities;
- Protection of rare and endangered plants of yugoslav flora;
Studies of micro-organisms and plants as bioindicators of the environmental state;
Development of microbiological assays for the detection of the genetic material damages caused by the environmental agents;
Identification of plant constituents with antimutagenic/anticancerous properties;
- Fundamental studies in plant physiology
Plant propagation by tissue culture with a special emphasis placed on the conservation of gene fund of Yugoslav flora.
The pertinent support staff of the Faculty of Biology is in charge of growing and maintaining of the total plant fund of the Botanical Garden, which contains about 2,000 species of trees, scrubs and herbaceous plants.
