WHAT IS THE BOTANICAL GARDEN FUNCTION ?

Botanical Garden is not only the ”green oasis” in the center of the town, nor is it a common park. It is one of the teaching premises of the Faculty of Biology at Belgrade University and the center of botanical disciplines in Serbia as well as scientific and cultural heritage of the country.

Josif Pancic ¢s explanation on the necessity and significance of Botanical Garden runs: ”In order to meet current demands, Botanical Garden has two tasks to accomplish: to gather within a small place the flora of our country, so that its youth may learn botany there, on the one hand , and to gather all the exotic plants that are necessary for the garden to incorporate the vegetation of almost the entire world on the other...”

Nowadays, this Pancic¢s explanation on the necessity of the existence of the Garden might be broadened  given  that the Botanical Garden plays a major role in the protection and conservation of endangered plant species and the environment on the whole.
