Serbian reputable botanists have been quite aware that genuine scientific work cannot be conducted without communication with scientific public worldwide. Therefore, it is not surprising that the library of the Institute and Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” is one of the oldest and richest in this part of the world. In addition to 200 scientific and professional journals, the library also contains more than 6,000 books. Some of the journals, such as Flora, have been received for 150 odd years i.e. from 1818. Among the books one can find true rarities, museum pieces of permanent value, such as Flora Graeca, rare edition (1806-1826), Plantae Rariores Hungariae (1802), which are hand painted. The library takes a special pride in Flora Gracea, a 10-volume set, which is owened only by another 5 scientific centers in the world. The oldest editions possessed by the library are Clusii Historia Planetarum (Clusi¢s Plant History), published in 1601 in Antwerp and World History by Pliny the Second (L’ Histoire du Monde de C.Pline Second), published in 1562 in Lyons.
THE JOURNAL PUBLISHED BY THE INSTITUTE OF BOTANY
The Journal ”Bulletin of the Institute of Botany and Botanical Garden” was started by Prof. Nedeljko Košanin in 1928. Many well known national and foreign authors published their papers in the ”Bulletin” from all the fields of botany notably anatomy, systematics, plant ecology and physiology.
Since 1959 the new series of the ”Bulletin” has been published, which welcomes scientific contributions of the authors from the entire world. The Institute of Botany sends the ”Bulletin” in exchange for about 80 botanical journals to various parts of the world, enriching in this way its library fund and ensuring efficient exchange of the latest scientific information between national and foreign scientists. |
